What do you love about OT?

What I love about occupational therapy is its vast scope, including the opportunity to incorporate nature into my therapeutic practices. This field allows me to use diverse environments and holistic approaches, uniquely addressing each individual's needs. By integrating natural settings, I can collaborate with my clients to craft personalized support that helps them engage meaningfully in all aspects of their lives, enhancing their connection to the world around them.

How did you choose this profession?

My journey into occupational therapy was deeply personal and inspired by my grandmother's experience. As a teenager, I witnessed the profound impact of creativity and ingenuity in care when she suffered from two brain aneurysms. An occupational therapist suggested a pulley system to aid in her arm rehabilitation. Inspired, my grandfather constructed this system from rope and PVC pipes, adapting their home to her needs by building ramps in the pool and around the house. Watching him work seamlessly with the concepts introduced by the OT, I saw how therapy could be tailored creatively to fit the unique context of someone's life. This experience showed me the versatility of occupational therapy and ignited my passion to join a field where therapeutic approaches are adapted to meet individual needs in meaningful ways.

Why did you choose to become an OTAC board member?

I've been deeply involved with OTAC since my grad student days at CSU, where I began as a presenter and volunteer at conferences. Serving as the OTAC secretary for the past two years has been a continuation of my commitment to our community. I am drawn to the way we, as a collective, can advance our field, network, and empower both fellow practitioners and students. Being an OTAC board member allows me to contribute to our growth and ensure that as a community, we not only share knowledge but also inspire and support each other to innovate and excel. When we come together, we truly grow.
