Developmental Disorders Affecting Sleep: Trauma, Neurocognitive, and Motor Conditions
Courtney Palm, LMFT, Pediatric Sleep Specialist

Courtney Palm holds a master's degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University and has been a practicing clinician since 2005. A member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, she has conducted over 15,000 sleep consults in her career. Specializing in child development and early intervention, Courtney completed a clinical internship at the Child Development Institute in California and is certified in DIR: Floor-time, BABIES/Pre-Steps, and the Neuro-sequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT). Courtney worked with Early Intervention Colorado from 2010 to 2025 and is the founder of Palm Pediatric Training Institute (PPTI). Courtney, via PPTI, currently partners with therapeutic agencies and organizations to provide the Pediatric Sleep Intervention: 0-5 Certification course for therapists and nurses wanting to become certified in this specialization. Palm Pediatric Training Institute is an AOTA Approved Provider and approved by the Colorado Nurses Association and American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Title: Developmental Disorders Affecting Sleep: Trauma, Neurocognitive, and Motor Conditions
Overview: This session will first discuss the intersecting components of sleep that affect all children, regardless of development and/or diagnosis. This training explores sleep from a whole-child perspective that accounts for nutrition, gut-health, and other factors that influence sleep consistency and quality. We will then discuss the specific sleep considerations for children affected by unique developmental experiences and how to develop inclusive strategies for those families.

Beyond Discharge: Redefining Occupational Therapy in Acute Care

Description: Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) play a crucial role in helping clients regain their prior level of functioning. When clients are hospitalized for various reasons, they often experience deficits that impact their ability to perform essential activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). In the acute care setting, OTPs are responsible for evaluating clients, providing targeted interventions, and developing comprehensive plans and recommendations for post-hospital care. Our role extends to assessing clients' occupational performance while considering environmental factors, health conditions, and personal circumstances that affect their return to their previous living situation.

This course will focus on expanding knowledge of occupational therapy's role in acute care, using case studies to demonstrate the integration of both foundational and advanced clinical skills. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based interventions, which are critical for ensuring clients are discharged to the most appropriate setting, optimizing their recovery.

Human Trafficking: The Emerging Role of Occupational Therapy Practitioners

Description: The International Labour Organization estimates that there are approximately 49.6 million victims of human trafficking at any given time worldwide. Human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities and exploit them for their own benefit and profit.  OT practitioners have an opportunity to increase awareness and combat human trafficking. 

This course presents the most current information on human trafficking based on the United Nations 3P Protocol, United States law, and occupational therapy approaches.

Foundational information includes human trafficking statistics, types of trafficking, biopsychosocial deficits found in trafficked persons, research sources, and current occupational therapy and multi-disciplinary intervention approaches. These components provide the base to define potential occupational therapy programing in this emerging field.

The EDJI Committee will support the EDJI Chair by collaborating closely to advance initiatives that address systemic inequalities and promote occupational justice within the occupational therapy community in Colorado. The committee will assist in developing and implementing strategies to mitigate bias and foster inclusion, ensuring diverse representation and perspectives are considered in all efforts. By organizing town hall meetings, providing educational resources, and advocating for policy changes, the committee will bolster the EDJI Chair's efforts to promote culturally responsive care and align with the AOTA Code of Ethics. Additionally, the committee will work with the EDJI Chair and Secretary to review and update EDJI relevant standard operating procedures, support outreach to marginalized populations, and engage with community organizations, thereby reinforcing the Chair's mission to create a more inclusive and equitable occupational therapy profession.

Dr. Alyssa Lawson PT, DPT

Alyssa Lawson PT, DPT is the founder of Camp PT, an outdoor pediatric physical therapy clinic. She has over seven years experience working as a physical therapist in a variety of settings including pediatrics and outpatient care. As an avid outdoorswoman, she enjoys activities like skiing, river surfing and spending time in nature. Alyssa founded Camp PT after recognizing that many of the kids she saw in home care PT would greatly benefit from getting outside. She knows this can be a challenging task for families and wanted to help make it easier.

Title: Outdoor Physical Therapy, Expanding Care beyond the Clinic
Overview:

Outdoor and nature-based therapy is an emerging area of practice, especially within occupational therapy. However, there are very few clinics providing physical therapy outside at this time. This presentation explores the clinical rationale, evidence base, and practical implementation of conducting physical therapy in outdoor settings.

Drawing on recent peer-reviewed research, outdoor therapy has been found to provide many impactful benefits to the person as a whole. Some benefits include reducing stress, decreasing anxiety, improving mood, and reducing blood pressure and heart rate. Despite these positive findings, the underlying mechanisms driving these outcomes remain unclear. Additionally, there is limited research specifically examining outdoor physical therapy, requiring clinicians to extrapolate from broader nature-based and outdoor therapy literature.

The rationale for conducting therapy outdoors is to provide intervention within natural, meaningful environments where people typically interact, such as playgrounds, parks, and lakes. This approach aims to enhance skill development, promote confidence, and support functional carryover in real-world contexts.

This presentation will also address key considerations for delivering therapy outside, including safety, environmental factors, session planning, and clinical decision-making. Case examples will be provided to illustrate practical application.

Overall, this presentation aims to equip clinicians with an understanding of current evidence, highlight the potential benefits of outdoor physical therapy, and offer practical strategies for implementation in clinical practice.

Beyond Symptom Management: Root-Cause Approaches to Chronic and Neuropathic Pain
Shara Ogin, OTR/L, GCFP®, CEAS

Shara Ogin is an Occupational Therapist with 25 years of clinical experience, primarily in outpatient settings. She is also a certified Ergonomist with five years of practice and a certified Feldenkrais® practitioner since 2002, bringing an integrative, systems-based approach to her work.

She is the author of three books, including A Quick Guide to Easing Pain in the Workplace & Beyond, and has developed multiple educational resources, including DVDs, online programs, and over 50 open-source instructional videos focused on pain reduction and movement efficiency.

For the past 15 years, Shara has hosted Feldenkrais® retreats in nature and offers advanced trainings and seminars for practitioners.

Title: Beyond Symptom Management: Root-Cause Approaches to Chronic and Neuropathic Pain
Overview: Despite the effectiveness of occupational and physical therapy in improving function and reducing pain intensity, many patients with chronic conditions complete a full course of treatment yet continue to experience persistent symptoms.

In this presentation, Shara introduces root-cause approaches to pain management that address symptoms through neuromuscular re-education.

A core premise of this session is that many clients with chronic pain remain symptomatic due to the overuse of smaller muscle groups and the under-activation of larger muscle groups essential for daily functioning — such as typing, cooking, standing, reaching, and walking.

Compounding this is the reality that many clients operate in a state of sympathetic nervous system dominance, marked by anxiety, worry, and a persistent fight-or-flight response that further disrupts coordinated, effortless movement.

To truly address chronic pain, we must retrain the nervous system to release inefficient, compensatory movement patterns and the over-contraction of muscles surrounding the pain site — replacing them with synergistic, effortless alternatives.

Equally important is addressing the ergonomic and postural factors that may be contributing to the pain in the first place — an area where OTs are uniquely positioned to make a lasting difference.

Attendees will gain a fresh perspective and practical tools to apply directly with patients—and may even leave the session with greater freedom of movement and improved alignment in their own bodies.

Growing Strong Hearts: Understanding the Brain-Heart Connection & Caring for Children with CHD

Andrea Gerk, OTD, OTR/L, BCP

Andrea Gerk is a pediatric board-certified occupational therapist at Children’s Hospital Colorado where she specializes in pediatric cardiac care and rehabilitation. Her clinical and research interests center on quality improvement, patient safety, and optimizing outcomes for children with congenital cardiac disease. She has contributed to multidisciplinary initiatives focused on care standardization and process improvement and is passionate about translating evidence into practice to enhance patient and family-centered care.

Title: Growing Strong Hearts: Understanding the Brain-Heart Connection & Caring for Children with CHD
Overview: Children born with congenital heart disease (CHD) face a lifetime of challenges impacting overall development, cognition, sensory regulation, and participation in activities of daily living. These impairments begin in utero, sometimes before the CHD is identified, including genetic conditions, altered oxygen delivery, and impaired brain growth. Environmental factors, including parental stress, neonatal surgical intervention, and medication exposure further impact development. Early therapy intervention and environmental changes can address modifiable factors to support gaps in development during hospitalizations however ongoing support after discharge is critical. Developmental and feeding challenges are ongoing throughout childhood due to prolonged hospitalizations, post-surgical factors and complications, and genetic diagnoses prevalent in this population. Through development of an outpatient mentorship program, we have provided CHCO therapists the opportunity to expand their knowledge of this unique population from in utero brain development through childhood, with attention to specific precautions following surgical interventions and genetic predispositions, to support and guide intervention and best practice. This mentorship has been limited to CHCO outpatient employees however these children are often referred to community partners across the state of Colorado. The goal of information presented is to support a partnership with community providers and offer an opportunity to expand therapists background knowledge and comfort with this population and the expected progression of development.
